Culture and Tourism Minister Jero Wacik opened the Lake Sentani cultural and art festival at Asei village in Jayapura district on Thursday.
The event`s opening ceremony was highlighted by an Australian aborigine who played a traditional flute on the stage.
The audience at the ceremony responded to the flute playing by simultaneously beating tifa, the traditional Papua drum, thus adding to the festive atmosphere.
Present at the opening ceremony were also Papua Governor Barnabas Suebu and a number of domestic as well as foreign tourists from Australia and Asian countries.
On the occasion, a few tourists from Australia said they had come to get first-hand information about the Lake Sentani Cultural festival which was being held for the very first time.
The festival`s participants are from some 24 villages in west, central, and east Centani districts, located around Lake Sentani.
The festival will last from June 19 to 21, 2008.
