"The eruption was strombolian, with a bang sound," said Devy Kamil Syahbana, an official of the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center ( PVMBG).
The eruption caused fires in the forest within 2 km of the peak.
The latest eruption is said to be the biggest since the volcano began erupting in November last year. People living in the vicinity of the mountain reportedly fled their houses after the eruption.
The authorities, however, have yet to raise the volcano’s alert level. (JakartaPost)
